[Breeds] Family dogs have only ever been muts and I'm completely new to a lot of dog breeds... recommendations?

Introduction1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?Yes2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?I've been searching around for opinions on both ends and although I still haven't decided on a preference, I think I'm leaning more towards going through a breeder.3) Describe your ideal dog.Probably one that is confident and friendly. I'm hoping this survey can help me define that better4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?Husky, German shepards, shiba, there are also some of the smaller breeds I've been exposed to, but I can't really recall any particular breeds5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?Sit, Lie, Stay, Come.Care Commitments6) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?Couple of hours each day after work7) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?Working on those numbers as part of the process. To ballpark it I would say 2 hours on weekdays and 2 to 3 hours on weekends. I wouldn't know about dog parks, I'll get around to getting more info on those and about any in my area after this8) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?I would be willing to pay a professional to do it, as aside from bathing and brushing, I wouldn't trust myself with that level of groomingPersonal Preferences9) What size dog are you looking for?small or medium10) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?i can handle some shedding and barking. Not huge on the slobber front11) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?It would be nice to be able to, but wouldn't be a deal breakerDog Personality and Behavior12) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?somewhere in between13) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?leaning more to eager-to-please14) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?Probably not overly friendly or overly aggressive, just acknowledge that someone is there and being able to be trained to understand that stranger + middle of night + yard = bad, and stranger + daytime + knock on the door = ok15) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?I'm not sure, so I'll say no16) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid? Also not sure, If you ask some specific examples of common undesirable behavior I may have a better ideaLifestyle17) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?Still working that out, but lets operate under the assumption of a standard 8-9 hour work day18) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?My SO is the other person involved and the same or maybe even more then me19) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?no other pets20) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly? At least not in the immediate future21) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?None currently, but more of an exception atm. I plan to move in the future so if there are any common restrictions that someone more experienced could make me aware of then it's definitely a consideration22) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?I'm in the US, I currently live in Puerto Rico, but I plan on moving within the next year, which (after stabilizing) is when I would potentially be getting the dog, but I would like to take my time doing my due diligence and research.23) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live? Here in Puerto Rico its tropical temperature so sun and rain all year round. As to where I will be owning the dog probably North-East US climateAdditional Information and Questions24) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant. As mentioned above this is me doing research in advanced and trying to find out more about the different types/breeds and respective behaviors of dogs. I've never really owned/had family that has owned, anything other then muts, so the world of dog breeds is completely unknown to me aside from the 5 breeds an average layperson could mention off the top of there heads if asked on the spot. Lurking around the sub for the past few days I've seen terms, breeds and types that made me have to google just to keep up and understand what is being talked about. I have learned that even though for the longest time I would love to have a husky, realistically speaking I most likely could not give it the levels of physical activity that the dog would really need and have come here to learn about other breeds and not only consider what I like, but also what would be a right fit should i ultimately decide in getting a dog of my own. One last thing, please forgive this utterly clueless fool if I said anything totally ignorant in my post,if anything it would be awesome if you could point it out so I don't screw up in the future25) Feel free to ask any questions below. It's pretty late (for me) so I cannot come up with any right now, but if any pop up during the thread I will ask as a reply or edit it in for visibility. via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2rnjyns
