[breeds] Thinking about adopting!

My husband and I want to adopt a puppy/dog very soon. We bought a house and got married in the past year and we are thinking about children in the next year or so. I did not grow up with a dog (just a cat), but he grew up with dogs and we have dog-sat multiple times for different dogs, so we are not total newbies. What small/medium breed(s) should we consider adopting that will be okay with a new addition to the family in the next two years? We have a home with a fenced in backyard, and we are active so exercising him/her will not be a problem either. However, we both work full-time during the day, so he/she will be alone some time during the day.
