[Breeds] Who should I bring home?

Introduction1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs? This will be my first own dog but I grew up with dogs (up until I moved out at 23). I also used to run a dogsitting side gig so I have dealt with a various amount of dogs including ones that are blind and insulin dependent.2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a [reputable breeder]?I'd like to rescue.3) Describe your ideal dog.Would love a dog that I could take hiking, to the dog park, generally friendly, affectionate, medium energyish, enjoys running, and would love to practice off leash with them.4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?Currently interested in greyhounds because my mom adopted one right before I moved out and she really is lovely - I do understand they can have separation anxiety and also aren't allowed off leash(EVER essentially) but there is something about their relaxed disposition, generally being affectionate, and ours at least was able to keep up with hiking. Did not love that she wasn't really fond of other dogs and a little nervous.*German Short haired pointer - they are high energy, people friendly, affectionate, and are workers which I would love to have a dog that requires some mental stimulation. Also would enjoy the fact that they could hang with me almost wherever I went energy wise, because they are boundless with it!5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?Depending on the breed I'd end up with would love to train it off leash, re-call, various tricks(i'm interested in mentally training them), and otherwise just the basics.Care Commitments6) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?I'm open to several hours a day, I only work 3 nights a week and otherwise have no real commitments so I'm really wanting this gal/guy to be my best friend.7) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?3hrs approximately. Hoping to be able to jog with the dog as well as regular walks. Dog parks would be included as long as it was safe for them.8) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?Low effort grooming - i'd prefer for them to be kind of wash and go. I'll leave the ear cleaning and nail clipping to the pros :)Personal Preferences9) What size dog are you looking for?Medium (35lbs)- Large( up to 100).10) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?I'm pretty tolerant but would love a low slobber/low shed situation if possible.11) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?I'd really like to be able to practice this with them.Dog Personality and Behavior12) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?Love the snuggles!13) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?I'd like a combination, someone who is willing to be trained and enjoys their people but also okay with doing its own thing occasionally.14) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?I'd prefer a happy greeting, I don't mind barking to alert me to someone at our door or entering our property at all but I do not wish to have a dog that's aggressive towards strangers or fearful of them either.15) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?I am willing to but I'd prefer for it to enjoy other dogs.16) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?N/ALifestyle17) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?Up to 6 hours but not regularly at all because my SO will be home the nights I work and I will be home during the day.18) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?SO has no preference really as he has no experience with dogs but is also looking for a companion. He will be helping with duties, but most of them will fall to me as I'm home much more frequently.19) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?No.20) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?No.21) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?I rent currently and the only restriction is no "aggressive breeds".22) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?NA23) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live? The coldest it gets here is probably in the 30s Fahrenheit but the hottest can be low 100s in summertime.Additional Information and Questions24) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.I'm open to to other breeds of dogs but am generally looking at rescuing a dogs. I know the two dogs I mentioned above are opposites of each other but I have had interactions with both and just loved them! I'm interested in hearing what other dogs people might suggest so I can look at those options as well! Thanks again via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2rCBvix
