[Discussion] The cost of my dog his first year, for those of you who need a reminder.

I know more people have done this, but those threads fade to the bottom and I don't think there's anything wrong with reminding people of the costs of dog ownership.I don't feel like I'm an insane owner when it comes to splurging on toys/treats/dog bed/collars/leashes, etc. All those are pretty much what he has had since puppy, or just changed once. I started to splurge a bit more on training classes, and I have been feeding expensive food since the start (took a while to find what he did good on). So those are costs that you can save on if you compare yourself to my chart. However, the big thing I want to show here is vet costs for a dog THAT IS INSURED. Yes, that's right. I'm going to break it down for you guys. INITIAL COSTS* Visiting breeders - €50* Becoming club member (required) - €50 /year* Insurance - €239,28 /year* Dog stuff (leashes/crate/collar/toys, etc) - €300Total initial costs - €639,28Dog purchase - €1200 FOOD* Commercial dog food, first 9 months - €360* Raw food, last three months - €255* Chews/treats, 20/month - €240Total food costs for one year (but can def. be cheaper) - €855 DOG TRAINING* Dog walker (only needed for the past 2 months, once a week) - €80* Puppy class/starter obedience - €88* Follow up dog school, 2 semesters - €300* Balance and coordination training (€85 for 10 classes) - €170* Participation in days organized by breed club - €40* Dog boarding (once) - €14* Groomer (once) - €55Total dog training/care for one year - €747 VET COSTSNow comes my favourite. So, Arlo has a basic insurance, which doesn't cover hip problems (parents were HD-tested so I figured, not needed), nothing like physical therapy/osteopathy or other homeopathic remedies. I got the insurance the day I got him, but there's a one month 'waiting period' to prevent people from getting an insurance a day before they have major surgery on their pets. Unfortunately, Arlo developed eye inflammations before the waiting period was over, that were hard to treat and kept coming back. Insurance labeled these an "existing condition" and didn't repay anything. In addition, Arlo has had minor spinal issues that took a while to figure out, so he had multiple vet visits for it, hip X-rays (not insured), and eventually ended up needing physical therapy and now osteopathy to manage the problem. It's likely a problem developed during his birth, which was a difficult labor (all of this, not insured). * Check-up/vaccinations - €244,70* Inflamed eye that kept recurring and antibiotics - €253,95* Hip X-rays - €154,60* Physical therapy/osteopathy - €350* Other vet visits (induced vomiting, limping, emergency vet, etc) - €374,90Total vet costs - €1176,67The insurance has already been deducted, which was €201,48 (added to the total, brings my vet costs to €1378,15). So the total costs of owning my insured, health tested, pedigree, amazing breeder, etc etc dog for one year was: €4617,95 And I would do it all over again <3Puppy tax via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2rYbPgh
