[help] is it a good or a bad idea to introduce a new puppy to our 9 year old Labrador?

Our lab Dolly is the sweetest, friendliest dog I've ever met. She really is an angel. She is a little afraid of other dogs as she was bitten on the lip as a puppy and has never quite gotten over it.As she is getting on a bit, my mother and I thought it might be time to get another puppy, to establish it as part of our family before Dolly passes away. This is a plan we haven't told my dad about as we want it to be a surprise. He is besotted with Dolly and we are both worried about how he will handle her death. We think having another dog by that point will maybe help soften the blow. This isn't the only reason we want another dog - we feel it's time, there's space in our family and in our lives, we can afford another, etc. I'm just mentioning my dad's love for Dolly as it's relatively important in our decision making.Mom and I are super excited about the new puppy (who we will be getting from the same breeder so she will be Dolly's great great great niece or something) but the only thing worrying us is how Dolly may react to the new puppy. If she is upset by her, the entire thing will be a bust, as if Dolly is upset my dad will be 100% against it.We have never had dogs as a family before, so never lived through introducing a young dog to an old one. What is it typically like when you introduce a new puppy to an older, established dog? Is she likely to be ok? She really is very loving, and used to get on extremely well with my best friend's dog years ago before they moved away. My mom is sure that Dolly will be fine with the new puppy, but I feel anxious. Is it asking for trouble getting a new puppy?TL;DR: want to get a new puppy but worried our 9 year old lab will react badly. Is it likely? via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2sFki4u
