So my 11 year old Australian Shepherd has been diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma on her right hind leg. Initially, amputation was suggested but just yesterday we found a surgeon who feels like she can get good margins to remove the mass and save the leg. A large part of why she feels this is possible is because she plans to use a skin flap from the abdominal area to help close up the wound over the stifle(knee). Has anyone ever dealt with this type of surgery before? What is recovery like and how long? We prepared and researched the hell out of amputation surgery but I'm having problems finding experiences from others on this one. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
