Hi, it will be a while before we start looking at dogs, as we currently rent an apartment but will be moving to a pet friendly house with a garden, I know my answers are quite broad, but just wanted to see if any of our choices would definitely not work, or if there are any other ideas that jump out at you. Thanks1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?Kind of, family have always owned at least 2-3 dogs at any time, for the last 22 years, but have always walked/fed/tried training them. Always been spaniels and cross breeds really.2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?Happy with either3) Describe your ideal dog.A dog that's happy to have a bit of fuss and will come sit in the living room with us. My favourite dog i had growing up was a otterhound x staffy. He would come and play with you for 10ish minutes when you got in, would go on any length walk really, happy to play or sleep, little bit scruffy. Anything kind of close to that I guess?4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?We like Samoyeds, Golden Retrievers, Shibas, Staffies, poms and whippets. They're all a good sized dog, that seem like they'd be happy to have a ball thrown for 30 mins, or a long walk up the hills (other than the pom)5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?The basics, and a few more advanced things I guess, but would be happy to try teach it agility etc if it would help it.Care Commitments6) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?Probably around a few hours a day? More or less depending on the dogs needs as I don't really have many commitments7) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?Same as above, a dog training park around the corner from me, some hills (Malvern Hills, UK) woods, and fields all around I can walk it that have dogs around. Weekdays an hour or two maybe, but that's without including my girlfriend who'd be happy to do just as much.8) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?Daily if needed, my mum does dog grooming, around 10 minutes away from me, but anything needing a professional I'd be happy to go to.Personal Preferences9) What size dog are you looking for?Not gigantic, a big golden retriever is probably around the largest we'd like.10) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?Shedding and barking are fine, can deal with slobber but would prefer a little less.11) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?I'd probably prefer it to be able to go off-leash if possible, but happy to keep it on a leash until we get to areas it can run around safelyDog Personality and Behavior12) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?on a scale of 1-10 of snuggly to personal space, would be happy with anything between 1-7, but girlfriend wants something more snuggly13) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?Probably more eager to please, but happy to put the work in if it is quite stubborn.14) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?Would rather it be quite friendly/not very defensive, I wouldn't want strangers thinking they have to avoid my dog. Quite like stopping and talking and meeting other peoples dogs when walking my families dogs.15) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?Yes, but dogs seem to be everywhere where I am, so if it's a dog that can't really handle other dogs would be happy to pass on it so it doesn't struggle.16) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid? Not reallyLifestyle17) How often and how long will the dog be left alone? As it is, we're both out of the house around 7 hours of the day but would look at getting a dog walker/dropping it off at my parents on the way to work once it's used to their place. However, I will be moved to shifts soon where it'll probably be alone maybe 4-5 hours at the most but lots of local dog walkers/sitters.18) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?My girlfriend wants a dog just as badly and will share caring for the dog.19) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?Hoping to maybe get a cat, or another dog somewhere along the line20) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?None of our own or in our close family21) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease? We will be renting a house with garden that allows any pet22) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?England, and not many I can think of that are banned.23) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?During the day, coldest is about 0 to -2 ish, hottest maybe 28 ishAdditional Information and Questions24) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.N/A 25) Feel free to ask any questions below.N/A via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2sALd1i
