[Breeds] My senior foster dog just passed... looking for advice on a new breed for me.

Introduction1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs? No, my family has had many dogs, all various breeds. I had a hand in training all of them. I've fostered one dog in my adult life (a senior pitbull who recently passed) and my boyfriend and I own a corgi.2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?I'd rather go through a rescue, but if I want a puppy I'll find a breeder.3) Describe your ideal dog.I like cuddly dogs that prefer to spend their time with their owner. My favorite dog was a poodle, she loved to be right on my lap or by my side. She wasn't much of a player, but I like playing with my dogs. I'd prefer a smaller dog that doesn't need intense exercise.4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why? This is a hard one. My family owned lots of dogs from all walks of life. Some of my favorites were:Miniature Poodle: small enough, smart enough, didn't shed, and so much love!Chihuahua: I really like chi's. Most of them are really silly and playful and can be snuggly in their own way. Some are a little too offstandish though. Also: Like all of the toy group, Cairn, Westies, Bostons, Maltese, and Cockers for pretty much the same reason. Very friendly and affectionate dogs that have strong personalities.5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?I'm not much of a trainer. I once had a german shepherd and really enjoyed training him on a local obstacle course for fun, but I mostly just want basic obedience.Care Commitments6) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?To me, training is a constant process. I can train all day, every day.I'd like my dog to be with me at all times. After losing very snuggly pit bull, I've missed having a dog to constantly interact with. I'd like a lap dog who is always sitting by my side. The corgi is super aloof, so if we aren't playing then she doesn't care about us much. Our corgi likes to play. She'll come up and offer her disk and I never refuse. So, I can play anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending on what the dog wants. Potentially forever, because I love seeing happy dogs.7) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?About an hour to two hours is my max per day.Exercise is typically walks, disk catching, or ball throwing. I have a big ol' tennis ball launcher. Usually its either in the dog park or my back yardI prefer dogs that don't need or want much exercise though.8) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?A lot. I don't mind fur and I'm willing to groom my dog both at home and professionally.Personal Preferences9) What size dog are you looking for?Small. I like big dogs, but I'm a small lady and its easier to control a small dog.A bigger dog is fine if they're older.10) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?Shedding? Tons. Hair doesnt matter.Barking? It depends on the bark. The corgi bark is shrill and annoying, but a chihuahua's is typically dull and just yappy. I'd rather have a dull, constant bark than a shrill one.11) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?I never let dogs off the leash if they're outside, I don't think it's responsible.Dog Personality and Behavior12) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?Tons of snuggles.13) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?Do its own thing. I like dogs with a personality.14) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors? It doesn't matter much to me.I'd prefer a dog who can get used to strangers but I don't mind if theyre initially reserved.15) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?Yes.16) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?nipping or biting.Lifestyle17) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?8 hours per day, during working hours. If I go on a trip I either take the dog or leave them with a trusted sitter.18) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?My boyfriend doesn't care as long as the dog doesn't bite or act aggressive19) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?I have an old parakeet but I keep her away from all other animals. I also keep a lot of reptiles, but hardly any come out.20) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?None at all.21) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?Nope, hubs and I are settled.22) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?I live in a small town in California. Some apartments around here ban certain agressive breeds, but there's no laws banning any breed.23) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?It gets very hot in the summer (90-110F) and very cold in the winter (20-50F).However, I'm fine buying dog shoes and coats plus I'll leave my home temp controlled.Additional Information and Questions24) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.N/A25) Feel free to ask any questions below.N/A via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2sBsZh8
