Introduction1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs? No. I've had at least 5 dogs in and out of the family growing up, total of around 15 years. I'm 20 now.2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?I'd prefer going through a breeder.3) Describe your ideal dog.Medium sized (smaller than something like a Lab), energetic enough to play with and take for walks but not to the point where it tears apart the couch when I'm at work. Affectionate and doesn't shy away from cuddles and snuggles and hugs. It would be nice if I could pick it up without it throwing a fit or trying to snap at me too.4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?Kai Ken and Hokkaido Ken because their fur is medium-short length, they're my ideal size, and they're really beautiful dogs. I've read that they're intelligent but very loyal and trainable. I'd love a little genius that would listen to me and be my best friend.I've also thought about Collies since a buddy has a Collie that is my ideal size, but their hair may be a little bit too long and sheddy for me. Probably not a huge deal though.5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?Sit, stay, come, leave it, regular dog commands. Can't think of anything elaborate but I suppose "grab me a beer" would always come in handy at parties.Care Commitments6) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?An hour or two of full attention training/walking/playing sounds good to me. Otherwise I'd still be spending a lot of time with it as ideally it'd be with me wherever I go when I'm home.7) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?I'd probably say anywhere up to an hour of exercise a day sounds good. Mostly thinking about just walking and playing at home.8) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?I'd be willing to brush hair once a week or so.Personal Preferences9) What size dog are you looking for?Medium.10) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?I can handle shedding as long as it isn't completely ludicrous amounts a day. I'd prefer less barking (for instance I get home late at night on weekends and I wouldn't want it to wake my parents with excessive barking). Minimal slobber is ideal, I'd prefer a cleaner dog.11) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area? It'd definitely be nice, but I'm not holding my breath with the breeds I've been looking into.Dog Personality and Behavior12) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?I'd prefer a dog that doesn't get fussy or aggressive when I get snuggly.13) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?No preference, though I do prefer loyalty. If that goes hand in hand with the latter, then sure.14) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors? One or two barks is fine. Ideally would be quiet when I tell it to be. However it wants to, but I'd rather it understand that a person is okay if I say so so it doesn't get nervous and growly around them.15) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?I'd prefer a dog that isn't aggressive towards other dogs or at least will obey my commands to come or sit instead of trying to cause trouble.16) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?None that I can think of besides tearing up furniture and crapping in the house and excessive barking.Lifestyle17) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?Every day for 9-10 hours as I work. I might eventually bring it to work with me but I might not always have a job that cool.18) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?The other people don't have any particular preferences (probably just the same as mine) and wouldn't be responsible for any of the care.19) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they? Two dogs, a male English Bulldog and a female Yorkshire Terrier. Though both pretty old (Bulldog is 14!)20) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly? Not unless I bring him to my friends house where they have a baby, but I wouldn't let it near him if it wqs exhibitting sketchy signs/behavior.21) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?I plan to move out sometime, yeah.22) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?Currently Bullhead City, Arizona. Not aware of any breeds banned here.23) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?Summer temperatures peak at around 125, winter can get to around 42ish. Ideally the dog would be inside the air-conditioned house in the summers. Regardless though I'm not living here forever and plan to move a twon or two over where its typically 20 degrees cooler in the summer.Additional Information and Questions24) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.N/A25) Feel free to ask any questions below.I'm mostly interested in the Japanese breeds because they're beautiful (also I have an interest in Japan, Japanese friends, took a semester in college, plan to go back, and even want to train my dog in Japanese for my own practice as well as possible ancestral familiarity with the sounds of the language (if that exists; I've heard of police training dogs in other languages for that reason)). If the research I've done on the Kai or Hokkaido is flawed or there's any big errors I've made, what are they? Are there any Japanese breeds that fit my preferences? If not, is there anything medium sized with short/medium length hair that is a better fit? via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2rDpxm1
