[Discussion] Pet Insurance Was The Best Decision We Ever Made

I know this topic gets debated quite often, it's always a gamble, will I ever need it, am I wasting money, how much are you willing to spend when the time comes, etc. Just wanted to share our experience with a particular company. This is in no way a paid advertisement or fake review. We've had PetPlan since we got our dog, when he was 8 weeks old. We read through all the paper work and know our terms/conditions (what's covered and what is not). We make sure he has his yearly checkup and teeth cleaned (if needed). It is very important to have the medical history on hand and kept documented. There's been some horror stories out there when a vet closes up shop and you can't prove yearly checkups. For the first couple years, we never had to file a claim. My wife questioned if we were wasting money and if we should cancel it. In the beginning, we were paying $37 a month for 100% reimbursement, $200 deductible, $25k limit. Every year, it went up a few bucks. This year, some people saw a significant increase. They changed underwriter and the plans changed a bit. Now we have $300 deductible, no limit and 90% reimbursement. I'm assuming this happens with other companies as well. The first time we had to submit a claim, was to treat him with anxiety 2 years ago. After our baby was born, his anxiety got out of control. To the point where he was hurting himself. One day we came home to him trying to get into the babies room, door was closed and we left the white noise machine on by accident. So I think he thought we left the baby home alone. Carpet was torn up in multiple areas, down to the subfloor. We took him to the vet to take care of the wounds and to see if something else was going on with him. PetPlan covered everything after deductible. Our plan included Behavioral for up to $1,000.Things were smooth sailing for a while. Again, we evaluated if we should keep the insurance or not. We even considered looking at other pet insurance companies to see if we can get a lower price or if better plans existed elsewhere. Until he got an infection on one of his paws, twice. One day we noticed a red bump and it got bigger the following day. PetPlan came through again and covered everything after our deductible. Now the big one... poor pup, we noticed he had a small growth on his gums. When he had an infection on his paws, they did a complete checkup on him. So it must of grown very recent. They ran labs and scheduled emergency surgery to remove it and test it for cancer. Sadly it ended up testing positive for cancer. So now we're in the process of seeing other doctors for treatment and more surgery, to try to prevent it from coming back and manage it. PetPlan so far, has been approving our claims with ease. They've been awesome answering our questions/concerns. They also seem to be pretty good working with our Vet, when they need more supporting documents. Submitting a claim is extremely easy, through their app. We usually get a check in the mail 2-3 weeks after submitting the claim.I don't know what the future holds for our dog, I really hope we can at least get another few years with him and then some. But PetPlan has made everything so easy for us and lets us focus on him, instead of worrying how we're going to pay for everything. Going into a cancer center for dogs is pretty scary. More so when you see the cost of everything and then have to make that decision to move forward, or hope for the best.So for those who debate between getting it or not. Really think about it, because you never know what can happen in the future and how much you will need to spend with very little notice. Pets can be very expensive! But they're totally worth it. via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2rEb4WX
