Sorry this will be kind of long just want to get as much detail in it as possible.I recently adopted a 1 year old dog from a shelter about 4 hours away from my home. They said he was a malamute rottie mix but I now think he is more of a husky shepherd mix. They claimed he was a dog/kid/cat friendly guy who had a little training. That was perfect for me I wanted a dog that was friendly with all creatures and would be houstrained for the most part. We have 1 cat and 4 kids who stay with us on occasion. So far he is perfectly house trained, a fun playful goofball, and he doesn't bark at all. However he will play bite (even when we aren't engaging in play) or put his mouth on me when he wants something I won't give him. He gets dominant with us or other dogs sometimes but we are commanding and he gets the idea that we won't submit. The real problem is that he is hyper focused on all things cat and we cannot get his attention away from waiting at the door where the cat is being held. We waited a week and he started to ignore the door for us mostly. Then we introduced them and were hopeful he would just want to smell the cat but he lunged for him extremely fast and the cat ran off right before he got him (he was on leash so couldn't follow). Then the searching and door obsession (even doors without cats behind them) worsened.Outside the house he pulls for cats on walk whereas he is otherwise great on leash even when people, dogs or cars pass. He also chased a roaming neighbor cat up a tree in the backyard when he was outside for a bathroom break. We are in love with him but are willing to take him back if there's no hope left because our cat deserves a safe home free from constant confinement. The shelter has a no refund policy and I've paid over over 200 for his adoption fee. They might issue a credit toward a different dog "in extreme circumstances" but I don't trust their evaluations now. I have asked multiple trainers in my area if they can help us but they all charge over $50 an hour and say it might be unsuccessful.Any advice? Anyone here ever trained a dog to be cat friendly? Did I waste $200 by being naïve? Should I put more into him or take him back before I go broke? via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2sujKhP
