[Help] Puppy in an apartment

So my girlfriend and I just obtained our first puppy and last night was his first night home. We've taken the crate training route and he did pretty well for it being his first night. Some barking and a lot of whining but we made it through. My only concern is this: we live in an apartment building with tons of neighbors and whenever we have him in his exercise pen or crate for more than 10 seconds he starts wailing and barking. I'm sure this is normal but it seems he can't stand to be alone at all. We really don't want to upset everyone in the building. Are there any steps or training we should be doing to minimize his barking and crying? I want him to eventually be able to stay in his crate/pen for greater lengths of time without getting stressed out like this.Thanks in advance for any help via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2rDSJJx
