Hi all, long time lurker.. first time posterer.Recently my wife and I decided to foster a pocket pitbull. She had a rough past, and she is extremely reactive to other dogs. She was picked up as a stray with multiple scars all over her, and the running theory is she was used in dog fighting. She is the sweetest dog when it comes to people or kids. But when she sees a dog it's like a flip switches in her head and she automatically begins lunging, barking, and making a sound that I can only describe as what I would assume a pig being slaughtered sounds like. The first day we got her she reacted to our neighbors dog through a chain link fence we share in our back yard--an experience I've never had before. At that time my wife explained the situation to our neighbor, and that we don't expect anything from them. After all, we're the ones with a reactive dog -- it's not her problem.Fast forward a few days. It's time to let our girl out to do her business and get some exercise in the yard. I do the responsible thing and check to see if the neighbors dog is out, she wasn't. Score! After a few minutes of being outside, she lets her dog out -- so I bring mine in. I wait until she brings her dog in.. OK -- her dog's in. So I bring mine out. She lets hers out again. This pattern goes on for about 3 times total, and the last time my dog was able to slip her collar and get away from me (not going to let that happen again). Now my dog is desperately trying to get to the other side of the fence, all the while barking, lunging, and pig squealing. While her dog is in the middle of her yard, obviously frightened. While I'm trying to wrestle with my dog to get the collar on her and get her back in the house, my neighbor sits there and does nothing. All she would say is that "they have to get used to each other" and "they will become friends soon."Given my dogs reaction to other dogs so far.. I find that unlikely. I'm trying to do my best here to not inconvenience anyone else with the fact that I have a reactive dog. It would just be nice if my neighbor didn't go out of her way to let her dog out at the same time mine goes out. via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2slMSc6
