[Breeds] Dog suggestions?

Introduction1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?Owned three dogs. Not a lot of experience training, got a golden retriever as a puppy and potty trained her as well as basic commands and leash walking. Other two dogs were adults adopted from the shelter who already knew sit and stay and other basic commands.2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder? Not a strong preference. I'd prefer a dog that is less likely to require a lot of vet visits and I know shelter dogs tend to be healthier but that wouldn't stop me from getting a purebred.3) Describe your ideal dog.Large or extra large. Preferably one that doesn't shed or drool too much, some is fine but I don't want to deal with a massive amount of either. Loving and sweet with us and will likely be good or at least not aggressive with other dogs and people. Not too challenging to train and interested in being around us whether we're playing or going on a walk or just hanging out at home.4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?I like Rottweilers, German shepherds, leonbergers, and newfoundlands but not everyone in the house would be happy with the last two and how much they drool and shed. I really like big dogs of any kind thought and would not be interested in a dog under 75 ish pounds.5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?Nothing extreme, basic manners like not jumping up on people, not taking food or objects that aren't theirs, sit and stay commands. Leash training so they aren't pulling me everywhere. I'd like the dog to be well socialized and good with other animals and people.Care Commitments6) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?I can devote somewhere between 1-3 hours a day to training activities, and probably around 4-8 in additional playing and interacting.7) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?Around an hour a day. Probably mostly walks. Dog parks would be additional8) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?Brushing for 5-10 minutes every day is fine, and occasional trips to the groomer (once every 4 months or so) wouldn't be a problem but nothing that required a lot of work.Personal Preferences9) What size dog are you looking for?Large or extra large. Minimum of 75 pounds.10) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?A minimal amount of all of these things. Some is fine but I don't want to have to carry a drool rag around with my dog or have to vacuum multiple times a week or get complaints from the neighbors.11) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area? Not especially. It would definitely be a bonus to be able to play fetch in local parks without worrying but not a requirement.Dog Personality and Behavior12) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?Snuggly. Definitely affectionate13) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?Eager to please but it would be good if the dog was able to be home alone for a few hours occasionally and could play with his toys or sleep without a problem.14) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?Aloof or suspicious but not aggressive unless there's cause to be. I would rather the dog isn't barking everytime a gardener comes or something of the sort but some amount of guard dog traits would be nice. If that's not possible, it would be preferable for the dog to be friendly with most everyone then on guard with everyone. The dog should be friendly with visitors and friends he's familiar with.15) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?No not in a dog this size. The dog doesn't have to be able to play with other dogs off leash (although that would be great) but they should be able to go on walks or drive past other dogs without trouble.16) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?Aggression and excessive drooling. Shouldn't be too anxious or bark a lot, obviously some barking is okay.Lifestyle17) How often and how long will the dog be left alone? No more than a few hours each day. The dog wouldn't have to be kenneled for that time and would have access to toys to keep them entertained.18) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?Multiple people will be walking the dog, feeding the dog, and playing with him. The limitations on drooling and shedding are largely because of the other main caretaker who doesn't want to deal with that.19) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?No.20) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly? No. Young children live across the street so the dog may see them on walks but nothing more.21) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?No.22) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?Pitbulls are not banned but heavily discouraged in my neighborhood.23) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?Winter temperatures get as low as 22 but average in the 40s. Summer can get as hot as 95 but average in The 80s and 70s.Additional Information and Questions24) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.N/A25) Feel free to ask any questions below.N/A via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2rgzKGI
