[Help] Need advice for our first dog! :D

My husband was never allowed to have pets growing up... On the other hand, I basically grew up on a farm. I was raised always having Newfoundlands and I LOVE them. However my husband thinks they might be too big :P. He wants something that doesn't shed a whole lot, doesn't smell, and has a great temperament. (Medium sized).
