Introduction1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs? This will be our first dog of our own, but have both had family pets when we were young.2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder? No preference.3) Describe your ideal dog.We are looking for a dog that will become part of our family, that is loyal and loving, cute, and likes going for walks/runs. It also needs to be good with kids.4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?Golden retrievers, labradors, border collie, dalmatian... I guess these are dogs that I find "cute" or appealing.5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?General obedience (sit, stay, lay down). I'd also like to be able to let the dog off leash and have it return to its name, and be good while walking on a lead (not pulling the lead etc)Care Commitments6) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?1-2 hours most days a week7) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? Mostly walks but also include dog parks, beaches every now and then.8) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? Slobber - not too concerned but preferably not a great amount11) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?Very. I'd love to be able to take the dog to the beach and let it run, and not be concerned about its behaviour around other animals/people or it coming back.Dog Personality and Behavior12) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?Snuggly, but not too worried.13) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?One that prefers interaction with us14) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?I'd be happy to have a dog that barks at door knocks or someone near the house. But I wouldn't want a dog that barks at anyone who simply walks past.Greet visitors eagerly without jumping up on them15) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?Preferably not16) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?Biting or aggression towards children is a deal breaker.Lifestyle17) How often and how long will the dog be left alone? We both work shift work, so there could be time where the dog is alone for 12 hours in a day for 2-3 days, or times when we are with it all the time for 4 days straight.18) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?We are pretty aligned on what we want/dont want.
