[Breeds] Just filled out the dog breed questionnaire in the sidebar, any advice is very welcome for first-time dog owners

Introduction1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?Yes2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder? We (my girlfriend and I) would like a rescue.3) Describe your ideal dog.We would like a medium to large sized dog. We would consider this to be a dog that will weigh 50-75 pounds fully-grown. This dog will end up coming to work with me (at a software company), so it would be need to be well-behaved around people and some other dogs while also being quiet and content with laying around for a few hours (with some walks throughout the day). One of the main things is a dog that will not bark much.4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?We haven't narrowed down to many breeds because we don't anticipate being able to find a specific breed from a rescue. The idea of a good-sized, relaxed dog is ideal to us.5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?We think that crate-training would be a good idea for our situation. Other than that, normal commands like sit, stay, etc. We aren't too concerned about fancier tricks.Care Commitments6) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?Outside of work, we plan to devote a lot of time to interacting and training our dog each day. During the day at work, I'll be able to interact a bit with the dog, but nothing too much so that I can still get stuff done.7) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?During the weekdays we can devote 15-30 minutes before work and during lunch. After work, as long as necessary. On weekends, we can do as much exercise as possible, probably 1-2 hours total not including just general playtime. We do plan on going to do parks occasionally, maybe once every week or two weeks.8) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly? We are willing to groom as necessary, but the lower the maintenance the better. We are willing to pay a professional to do it if necessary.Personal Preferences9) What size dog are you looking for?Medium to large sized dog. Optimal weight fully-grown would be 60-75 pounds probably.10) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?Shedding - Nothing over the top. Any average amount of shedding we can handle. Barking - We'd prefer a dog that rarely barks and are willing to put in the time to train the dog. Slobber - Again, nothing over the top but average amounts are fine.11) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area? It'd be nice, but not really necessary. We are living in a condo without a fenced area and it'd be cool if we could trust the dog to not start running away if he goes outside.Dog Personality and Behavior12) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?Snuggly.13) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?Somewhere in-between. Eager-to-please is good at home but could be tougher at work.14) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors? We'd like the dog to not even take notice. We have been reading on how to train dogs to be relaxed in these situations.15) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs? There will be other dogs at work, so this is not really an option.16) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?Besides aggressive behavior, nothing comes to mind.Lifestyle17) How often and how long will the dog be left alone? If the dog is well-trained to be in the crate, I may not take him to work every day (but would be willing to come home at lunch to let him out and can occasionally work from home). This would be 3-4 hours at a time.Other than that, sometimes at night for an hour or two.18) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?My girlfriend and I will be taking care of the dog together. We have similar dog preferences.19) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?No other pets20) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?No21) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?Rent. There are some restrictions on breeds (some "aggressive" breeds are banned, don't know the exact list). No hard weight limit.22) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?Iowa, unaware of any laws23) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?Iowa, so 90s in the summer and teens in the winterAdditional Information and Questions24) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.N/A25) Feel free to ask any questions below.N/A via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2rUZLNd
