Introduction1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?Yes, as the primary caretaker.2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?I will be rescuing3) Describe your ideal dog.Quiet and can get along with cats. Also playful.4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?Small dogs as they usually fit the requirement to live in an apartment. _^There's a dachshund mix currently up for adoption if anyone has input on them (and if he's even still available).5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?Just the basics I believe: sit, stay, shake hands, etc.Care Commitments6) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?1hr or more on work days, and substantially more when I'm off.7) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?Walks, (sidewalk or through local park), I would like to try a dog park though it's intimidating to be honest. At least 1 hour total on days I work, and more when I'm off. I'm considering a dog daycare a few times a week.8) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?I can brush each day. Generally in the 70s for summer, and Winter 20s-30sFAdditional Information and Questions24) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.I've met with 2 dogs in a meet & greet so far. A shih-tzu/Wire-hair terrier mix who was not interested in toys and that worried me because I felt like it would be harder to train and find what he likes (though the staff felt he may just be nervous). My cat is hard to find toys she'll play with as it is! And a Chihuahua mix. I did not feel they would be a good fit for me (not the breed but the actual dog)I've posted this questionnaire before and got great answers. One person said "small, white and fluffy" breeds would be good and I agree, but small dogs go so quickly in the shelter. I missed a poodle/yorkie mix by minutes. My situation has also changed slightly and I've been actively looking so I was hoping to get more input, or if I just need to be more patient. My Cat: When I adopted her they said she did good with the other pets in the home but they didn't specify the type, and she wasn't with the family long. She's still young and active, but picky (catnip does nothing, doesn't even care about a laser pointer). I brought a tiny tiny (like 5 lbs) hyperactive chihuahua into my apartment as she was just wandering the halls. They were not introduced properly because I had no time to plan but she did not hiss or try to swipe at the dog. She was agitated or maybe even scared though...this dog had a lot of energy for a tiny thing. I hope this will help a bit.25) Feel free to ask any questions below. When it comes to shelter dogs, is it less about the breed and more about how they grew up? via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2qLAShI
