Introduction1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs? This will be my first pet dog in 15 years. During that time I do have 7 years of training and working with Military Working Dogs2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?Absolutely looking for a rescue dog. One concern I do have is some of these rescues seem to just as expensive as a breeder.3) Describe your ideal dog.A family friendly dog that is great with car rides, kids, and other dogs. We want a laid back dog but also one that is down for going to the park and walks.4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?We are looking for a medium sized dog, not breed specific but we do like the idea of a herding dog. Main concern is a dog which will be too energetic. The reason we are looking at herding dogs is because their size and intelligence.5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?Main training would focus around basics, sit, stay, heel, come, down ect, big one will be traveling in a car. We also need the dog to be an emotional support animal.Care Commitments6) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?My wife is a stay at home mom due to her being disabled but she will be able to take the dog on 2-3 walks a day, I will be training the dog daily or a few times a week depending on what needs to be worked on.7) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park? Two or three walks a day, we also have a park nearby that we will be going to multiple times a week.8) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly? We will do all healthcare at home, brushing will be daily or as needed.Personal Preferences9) What size dog are you looking for?Looking for between 30-50 pounds.10) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle? Some on all accounts, not a lot on any point, barking would probably be the least ideal.11) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area? Not a must but it would defiantly be ideal to be able to let the dog off leash and play trusting that he/she would be able to come back when called.Dog Personality and Behavior12) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?Snuggly dog, this will primarily be an emotional support animal. Granted I happen to believe that any dog is an emotional support animal.13) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?50/50, I don't want to trip over the dog every time I get up but I do want the dog to be near, no point in owning a pet if they are always in another room or stuck outside.14) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?Aware of it but we are not looking for a guard dog. I rather not hear uncontrolled barking every time someone walks by the door.15) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?Willing to train the dog out of bad habits, but not willing to deal with a dog who is completely aggressive towards other dogs.16) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?Agressivness, overly loud.Lifestyle17) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?Rarely, my wife will be at home with the dog while I am at work, and our daughter will be at school.18) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?Nothing that has not already be brought up.19) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?No other pets but we will be living near family with other medium sized dogs. I would like for them to all get along but not a deal breaker.20) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?Yes, we have a 6 year old daughter.21) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?N/A22) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?N/A23) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?80s/90sAdditional Information and Questions24) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.I think everything has already been said. One big thing is we will be moving across country towards the end of the next month. I have been questioning how wise it was to adopt a dog before driving cross country, but there is an appeal to traveling and getting to know the dog and having a lot of training time packed into the travel.25) Feel free to ask any questions below.Right now we are in the very beginning stages of adopting a dog, we are mainly looking on pet finder and going to be going to an event this weekend. Only looking for adoption. Is there a better way to find dogs? via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2qRCyqN
