[Discussion] "Balanced" training is never harmful?

I know a lot of people, not necessarily many on this sub, who believe that "balanced training" is the solution for aggressive dog rehabilitation. I have seen many arguments about how you can't "fix an aggressive dog with a cookie", and then these individuals go on to purport that you can however fix dog aggression via "pack leadership" and aversive training methods.I ran across this article today that really highlighted, in my opinion, the dangers of using these aversive methods to "rehabilitate" previously aggressive dogs. http://ift.tt/2rqykrv you check out the Facebook page of the supposed shelter the dog was from at Forever Home Rehabilitation Center, you can see that they subscribe to the idea of balancing out dogs mentally using pack leadership and corrections. If you don't watch the clip in the article, the granddaughter of the victim mentions that the dog immediately went after the elderly woman when the shock collar was taken off. Evidently they'd had the dog for only a few hours and he CAME with a shock collar on, but they were told by the trainers that it could be removed. There's no denying how tragic the incident is, but I think it's important to discuss the potential danger of masking aggressive behavior underneath aversives and positive punishment. This dog was clearly never "rehabilitated" but had suppressed his aggression/anxiety/whatever it was due to the training methods utilized. Thoughts? via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2qH8DFW
