[Help] Do long ears for poodles cause more ear infections?

My mother has a toy poodle. He is a terrifically sweet dog and I frequently look after him. She likes to keep his ears cut long. And for a while getting ear infections was never an issue, but recently he has started to develop them.I know with her previous toy poodle she did the same thing and had the groomer keep his ears long and he constantly had bad ear infections, and also went deaf around the age of 11. The older dog was also about 2 inches shorter than the one she currently has now, so he was lower to the ground.I was curious if the long ears were the cause of this? I know that towards the end of the previous dog's life it actually went deaf, which I have a hard time accepting isn't in some part due to a constant string of ear infections.I remember reading once that basset hounds are really prone towards ear issues as well because of their ears hanging low and constantly dragging on the ground.I didn't know if anyone here had any evidence of long ears for poodles causing ear infections. I would hate for another dog to go through so much trouble just because of "cute ears". I would want something kind of conclusive like a study or something to try and convince her to change her grooming practices. Also if anyone knows what the recommended ear length for a toy poodle should be maybe that would be something to work with as well. via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2rQT6DQ
