[Help] [Vent] I made a huge mistake and I feel like a shitty dog owner

We just moved to a new house and new area. My routine with my doggo Sidney is to take him out front to pee before bed, no leash. The neighbour across the street does the same with her pup, jewel, and they both stay on their respective properties without issue, verbal commands only. Sidney is smart, and obedient, but he has a huge prey drive. He once chased cars so bad we got him a shock collar. It worked with minimal shocking and now we just vibrate it to remind him not to chase. When walking him in the area I've found I need the collar on him, because there is just so much wildlife. The walking is great though, being right next to a conservation area, we are really enjoying it.Well, I took Sidney out tonight to pee without the shock collar, it was charging. There was a rabbit on the lawn. He chased it right down the street. I ran after him and called for him, no response. He ran into someone's backyard and it was a terrifying minute before he came to my calls. I grabbed him by the collar and walked him back. A few houses from mine, a woman yelled out her front window at me: "you should put your fucking dog on a leash." (She does not live on the property he ran into)I am really not one for confrontation. Especially not considering this woman was clearly worked up. So I ignored her and just kept walking. In retrospect, I probably should have just explained the situation. She yelled again, "well, you're getting reported then bitch."I'm just pretty upset about this whole situation. I definitely should have had better judgement. And this woman's comments really got to me. I don't think city officials are going to be overly upset, I just feel like a failure. Other than the swearing, the woman's comments were reasonable. If you can't control your dog he or she should be on a leash. I guess I can't control Sidney, and that really deeply hurts. I put in so much effort to get him to a place where he is very obedient and well mannered. He gets so much physical and mental stimulation. He well loved and I spare no expense for his health. But in that moment this woman saw me as a bad owner and was so angry she felt like she should lay into me. via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2rT3LwP
