Introduction1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?I grew up with dogs but they were always the family dog so this will be the first dog that is exclusively mine. We never really did much training with our dogs other than teaching them to sit. I work at a doggy daycare so I have lots of experience with dogs and handling them.2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?I would be up for either of these options, all of my previous dogs mixed breed rescues.3) Describe your ideal dog.I would like a dog who is very social so they would be able to go to work with me at the doggy daycare. I also like to go on 4+ mile walks a couple of times a week so I want a dog who is willing to do that with me. I typically work at the daycare 4-5 days a week for about 7-9 hours a day so I would like the dog to get most of their energy out at daycare on the days that I work. When I come home I want the dog to be lazy/ tired for the day and willing to just chill with me.4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?Labs or Lab mixes- I've had two Lab mixes and they were great! I love the Lab personality and I like large dogs. My only hesitation is that my experience with labs at doggy daycare has not been a good one, all of the labs we have had there have behavioral issues (mostly severe anxiety) which has kind of turned me off of them.Great Danes: I work with a ton of these dogs and I have yet to meet a Dane that I don't adore! I am worried about health issues though and I know that a good breeder can eliminate some of these problems.Australian Sheppard: I like these dogs and I am interested in getting into agility and doing additional training so I feel like they could be a good candidate:5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?I am interested in training! I am hoping to become a certified dog trainer in the next year so I would love a dog that wants to work with me in that way. I am also interested in dock diving and agility training because that always looks like the dogs are having a blast!Care Commitments6) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?So my future dog would get to go to doggy daycare 4-5 time a week for 7-9 hours a day. I would be interested in doing training for 30 minutes to 2 hours every day of the week. On my days off and weekends, I like to go walking and usually walk for 4+ miles, I am also interested in hiking with my dog since I live near some great trails, I want to train off the leash walking also. I would like a dog that I don't need to supervise 24/7 because I also like to go shopping and do other things that a dog can't always be there for. Ideally, the dog would never have to spend more than 5 hours in a crate.7) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?Doggy daycare 4-5 days a week for 7-9 hours each day. Willing to go to a dog park on my days off and also walks/hiking on my days off.8) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?I don't mind brushing but I really don't want a dog that I need to do grooming (haircuts) with. I have access to a professional grooming facility but I would prefer to only have to bathe my dog and brush them out.Personal Preferences9) What size dog are you looking for?Medium to Extra Large. Small dogs aren't really my style.10) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle? Can deal with shedding ( will just give the dog a furminator treatment to help with that) and slobber does not really phase me. I don't like barking but I want to teach my dog so they know when it is and isn't okay to bark.11) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?I would like to be able to do this but I understand it takes training on my part.Dog Personality and Behavior12) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?I want a snuggle buddy, but the dog doesn't need to be my second shadow.13) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?Eager to please but still chill.14) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?I don't need a guard dog, I want my dog to be people friendly.15) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?I do not want a dog aggressive dog at all. I want a dog that is playful with other pups and that has good dog manners.16) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?I don't like dogs with an oral fixation but that is something I can work with during training.Lifestyle17) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?Ideally no more than 5 hours at any given time. I want to do crate training but I don't plan on crating my dog daily.18) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?My parents love labs. Other than occasional supervision when I am gone I will be the primary caregiver.19) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they? There is a Lab/Chessie mix that belongs to my brother and sister in law who will be at our house quite often, she currently goes to daycare with me and is VERY dog-friendly and social so the dog would need to get along with her.20) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly? Not now but I want to socialize them so that they are cool with kids. We have lots of kids in out neighborhood and if my brother and sister in law have kids I want a dog that is tolerant of children.21) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?I don't rent at the moment but I plan on it in the future.22) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds? No breed restrictions in my area but for insurance reasons we are not allowed to have pits at the daycare I work at.23) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?Summertime 90 degrees and Wintertime 35 degrees.Additional Information and Questions24) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.I drive a honda civic so the dog can't be bigger than my back seat.25) Feel free to ask any questions below.N/A via /r/dogs http://ift.tt/2qHxlBl
