[Help] - A year out from getting my first dog, how can I make it go smooth?

Hey everyone, I hope this post is allowed. I know it may seem distant, but due to my lease on my apartment and time constraints with college, I'm a year out from owning my first dog and I want to start planning everything now. What tips do you guys have for a brand new owner for adopting or rescuing a dog? I'll be living in an apartment, but I get out frequently and I would get out even more with a furry friend. This may sound sad but I'm literally looking for a best friend. I've moved to a big city and left all my friends and family behind, and I want my dog to be my best bud if possible.
